Intro to music

Hi, I am Linnette Perez. I will be taking you through my shift at Glazed Pottery Painting and Art Studio at 10 AM.

Walking up the stairs to the doorbell entering Glazed.

I head to the back and grab my apron.

I run to set the tables for the reservations or potential walk-ins.

Similar to a restaurant, I set the table. With a slip of paper to fill out your information and color selection list, pencils, and glasses of water for paintbrushes, not to drink from. Yes, there have been people who thought they were drinking glasses.

When customers walk in we greet them, and mention what they need to do if they haven’t been here before. After finding their table, they can look around the studio and pick out the pieces they would like to paint. Here at Glazed, you would only pay for the piece you pick out unless you want to do something a little special like a Cricut stencil or specialty glazes.

When they finally find the piece, they want to paint, I would come back to their table and explain how the painting process works. Then with the color chart with all the glaze colors, we have at the studio from our regular color options to speckled glazes. I explain they can have more than 4 colors they would just have to write it on the back. Also, I mention it is important to paint 3 coats of each color they pick. If they do less the paint will be translucent, and you can see the brush strokes. It is also important to mention we recommend painting light colors first, so it would be easier to see the colors. I ask if they have any questions and I leave the chart with them to give them time to choose their colors

After they have picked their colors, with their tickets I head over to the painting station, and I start to pour their paints in the order they wrote it on their ticket so it can be easier to locate the colors since some of the colors can be similar and be very confusing. Most of the time while customers are painting and they don’t need advice or tips I would work on other activities like sanding down pieces, cleaning previously used items, or painting demos. I head over to the sink and started washing brushes, palettes, and glasses.

After the customers are finished, they would leave their pieces with us for a 10-day period, to give us enough time to fire all the pieces from the previous days. When it is almost closing time, we would head to the kiln room and pick out pieces to load in the kiln. I learned how to do it recently, I would make sure it is at a cool temperature before unloading it. My boss would load the kiln as I would unload it.

Taking pieces out of the kiln can be surprisingly dangerous. When taking a piece out I have to slightly tap the bottom so the stilts that hold the pieces up, until they pop off. Sometimes they don’t pop off so I would have to tap them in different directions or pull them off, without having them fall onto another piece. When the stilts do fall off, I would put the piece on the metal cart and make sure it is organized so it is easier to sand and organize the orders. Finally, I would take the stilts and put them back in the bins which are organized by the number of spikes. Stilts can be very sharp, and many of my coworkers, even my boss, get pricked by them.

Audio of me putting stilts away

I did in fact cut my finger in the process of putting the stilts away.

After the 10-day period, customers would come back to the studio on the pickup date we wrote on their receipts, and mention they have to pick up their order from when they painted the other week. We would look up their last name on the organized shelf, and then wrap up the pieces they painted so they don’t break on the way home. Finally, I give them their pieces after putting them into the bag and I say “See you next time”.
